Reach Robotics

Manipulator Arms

DSMC own and operate several electric manipulator arms for use with our Fibre Optic Falcon ROV.

Typically skid mounted under the ROV, the arms can be quickly added or removed from the machine as needed. We also have a number of interchangeable grippers and payload interface brackets.

Manufactured by our friends at Reach Robotics in Australia these powerful manipulators have totally changed the capabilities of our Seaeye Falcon meaning we can now carry out complex tasks from a small ROV and vessel that would have previously required a work-class ROV operating from a costly specialist vessel.

We own the Bravo-3 and Bravo-5 arms and have previously hired the Bravo-7 from Reach Robotics for more complex tasks that require further dexterity.

The Reach Bravo-3

The Bravo 3 is a dependable 3-Function manipulator that opens up new compact inspection and intervention opportunities. Designed to conduct tasks usually reserved for divers, the arm’s usability and responsiveness pave the way for advanced applications.

When used in conjunction with the Bravo-5 we often use this manipulator to hold onto infrastructure to steady the machine for more delicate and complex tasks. This arm has less articulation and reach than our Bravo-5 but as a result can carry more weight.

  • Full-Extension Reach: 410mm

  • Weight (air): 4Kg

  • Wrist Torque: 20Nm

  • Full Reach Lift Capacity: 15kg

  • 450m Depth Rating

We have previously made a bespoke tool to fit the Bravo manips that incorporates a torque multiplier to increase the torque to 100nm for unfastening bolts.

The Bravo-5 is our workhorse for the Falcon. We have a handy, removable, wrist mounted IP camera for close up inspection and for keeping a close eye on dexterous tasks.

  • Full-Extension Reach: 700mm

  • Weight (air): 7.5kg

  • Full Reach Lift: 12kg

  • Max Lift Capacity: 20kg

  • 450m Depth Rating

The Bravo-5 can lift 12kg at full extension or 20kg in close to the machine. If the load is over 12kg the software monitors the load on the joints and limits the range of movement to keep it within the capability of the machine. We have also held onto and recovered much heavier loads of circa 60kg and whilst the arm couldn't lift and move the item, it successfully gripped and held onto it until the load was successfully recovered to deck with the ROV.

We have a large range of grippers, cutters and tools to suit the Bravo-5 as well as a payload interface bracket to affix bespoke loads and tooling.

Accessory Port Connector

We also have an Accessory Port Connector which allows the integration of 3rd party instruments – such as probes and cameras.

  • Max Current: 1A

  • Programmable Voltage Range: 12-24VDC

  • Connector MCBH8F - 8 pin female

The Reach Gigabit Ethernet 'Hub'

The Reach Robotics arms are best controlled via IP and therefore require an ethernet connection (although 232/485 are also possible). Running the arms over IP allows better control in the software and the use of the IP wrist camera.

Unfortunately the Falcon ROV only has one ethernet port on the mux. As such Reach Robotics made a subsea 'Hub' which contains an ethernet switch allowing multiple ethernet tools to be run at the same time. This was intended to allow two manipulator arms and the IP wrist camera to be used at the same time. However, DSMC commissioned Reach Robotics to make us a custom Gigabit hub with both 12v and 24v power outlets. This allows us to run a range of IP tooling at the same time (not just Reach equipment).

We use the gigabit ethernet hub to power our Blueview realtime imaging sonar, our 3D Photogrammetry modelling cameras, our Orphie low visibility camera, multiple manipulator arms and any other ethernet based tooling requiring 12-24v.

Reach Control Pro and the Master Arm Controllers

To operate our manipulator arms we have a pair of Reach Master Arm Controllers. These allow us to have the a precise and exact control of movement which is vital for the more dexterous tasks requiring a delicate or precise touch.

We also have the Reach Control Pro software which gives us detailed data on the performance and health of the arms as well as allowing us to dial in or limit the torque and force the arms will excerpt.
